Wim Wenders Withdraws His Own Film From Worldwide Distribution
German filmmaker Wim Wenders, who last week received a lifetime achievement award at the German Film Awards, has announced the withdrawal of his 1975 film The Wrong Move (Falsche Bewegung) from circulation. The decision follows years of appeals from actress Nastassja Kinski, who has objected to a scene filmed when she was a teenager. Speaking at the awards ceremony, Wenders addressed the controversy surrounding the film for the first time in public. In his acceptance speech, the director admitted that he was uncertain how to deal with a scene that raises serious ethical concerns today and appealed to younger filmmakers for guidance on how best to approach the issue.
The Wrong Move is one of the key works from Wenders’ early career. Written by Peter Handke and inspired by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s novel Wilhelm Meister’s Apprenticeship, the film follows a young writer travelling across Germany in search of purpose and identity. It also marked the screen debut of Nastassja Kinski, who played the young acrobat Mignon. The controversy centres on a scene in which Kinski, then 13 years old, appears topless alongside a significantly older male character. In recent interviews, the actress said she had spent years urging the director to reconsider the film’s continued distribution in its original form. According to Kinski, she was not adequately protected by the adults responsible for the production.
In response, Wenders acknowledged his responsibility and issued a public apology. He said the film would be withdrawn from all forms of distribution, including streaming platforms, television broadcasts and theatrical circulation. At the same time, the director stressed that he does not regard the matter as closed. According to Wenders, The Wrong Move could eventually become available again, but only after consultations with film institutions, archives and ethics experts. Kinski herself is expected to take part in those discussions.
