У резиденції президента Ісландії Бессастадір відбулася одна з ключових культурних подій року — вручення Íslensku bókmenntaverðlaunin, Національної літературної премії Ісландії. Церемонія пройшла вже 37-й раз та зібрала провідних авторів, видавців і діячів культури та традиційно стала маркером того, куди рухається сучасна ісландська література. Цьогоріч у трьох основних категоріях перемогли твори, які поєднують експеримент із формою, увагу до історичної пам’яті та гострий інтерес до соціальної реальності. У категорії художньої прози відзначено роман Сіґрун Палсдоттір «Блакитний пардус – Аудіокнига». Це смілива формальна гра з жанром: авторка переносить принципи аудіорозповіді в текстовий простір, створюючи багатоголосу розповідь, де слухачі стають співтворцями сенсу. Твір балансує на межі між вигадкою та історією, ставлячи під сумнів саму можливість повного знання про минуле і людину. У категорії дитячої та підліткової літератури перемогу здобули Аевар Тор Бенедиктссон та ілюстраторка Елін Елісабет Ейнарсдоттір із книгою «Директор школи». Історія про 12-річного хлопця, який несподівано очолює школу, поєднує гумор і сатиру з розмовою про відповідальність, емпатію та владу. Книга стала одним із бестселерів року й викликала жваві дискусії про роль школи та читання в житті дітей — особливо на тлі занепокоєння щодо зниження рівня грамотності.
Найкращою нон-фікшн книгою визнано біографію Крістін Свави Томасдоттір «Фрекен Дулла», присвячену складній постаті Йоганни Кнудсен — жінки, чия діяльність під час Другої світової війни довгий час оцінювалася однозначно й суперечливо. Авторка пропонує багатовимірний портрет, вписуючи особисту історію у ширший контекст трансформацій ісландського суспільства. Це приклад того, як сучасна документалістика переглядає усталені наративи.
Окремо було вручено й премію «Крапля крові» (Blóðdropinn) за найкращий кримінальний роман року. Нагороду отримала Марґрет С. Хьоскульдсдоттір за «Заплющує очі блакиттю» — напружену історію, дія якої розгортається на Західних фіордах. Книга представлятиме Ісландію на скандинавському конкурсі «Скляний ключ», що відкриває авторці шлях до ширшої міжнародної аудиторії. Премії традиційно присуджує незалежне журі з п’яти осіб, яке цього року обирало переможців із двадцяти фіналістів. Кожен лауреат отримав грошову винагороду та статуетку «Бленґур» — мідного ворона глибокого синьо-чорного кольору, що вже став впізнаваним символом нагороди.
Iceland Names the Books That Define 2025
One of the key cultural events of the year took place at the presidential residence of Bessastaðir — the presentation of the Íslensku bókmenntaverðlaunin, Iceland’s National Literary Prize. Held for the 37th time, the ceremony brought together leading authors, publishers, and cultural figures, and once again served as a marker of the direction contemporary Icelandic literature is taking. This year’s winners in the three main categories stood out for combining formal experimentation, attention to historical memory, and a sharp interest in social reality. In the fiction category, the prize went to Sigrún Pálsdóttir for her novel The Blue Leopard – An Audiobook. The work is a bold formal experiment: the author transfers the principles of audio storytelling into the textual space, creating a polyphonic narrative in which listeners become co-creators of meaning. The novel balances on the boundary between fiction and history, questioning the very possibility of complete knowledge about the past and about the human being. In the children’s and young adult literature category, Ævar Þór Benediktsson and illustrator Elín Elísabet Einarsdóttir won for their book The School Principal. The story of a 12-year-old boy who unexpectedly becomes head of his school blends humor and satire with a reflection on responsibility, empathy, and power. The book became one of the year’s bestsellers and sparked lively discussions about the role of school and reading in children’s lives — especially amid concerns about declining literacy levels. The best non-fiction book award went to Kristín Svava Tómasdóttir for her biography Fröken Dúlla, dedicated to the complex figure of Jóhanna Knudsen — a woman whose activities during the Second World War were long assessed in a one-dimensional and controversial way. The author offers a multidimensional portrait, placing the personal story within the broader context of transformations in Icelandic society. The book exemplifies how contemporary documentary writing revisits established narratives. A separate award, the “Blood Drop” (Blóðdropinn) for best crime novel of the year, was presented to Margrét S. Höskuldsdóttir for She Closes Her Eyes in Blue — a tense story set in the Westfjords. The novel will represent Iceland at the Scandinavian “Glass Key” competition, opening the door to a wider international audience. The prizes are traditionally awarded by an independent five-member jury, which this year selected the winners from among twenty finalists. Each laureate received a monetary award and the “Blængur” statuette — a deep blue-black copper raven that has become a recognizable symbol of the prize.
