Stavanger, one of Norway’s oldest cities, is preparing for one of the most significant events in its modern history. The anniversary celebration highlights the city’s journey from a medieval episcopal center to a contemporary hub of energy, technology, and culture. Founded in 1125, the Stavanger Diocese was one of the five historical bishoprics in the country. During the 1925 jubilee, King Haakon attended the ceremonial service in the local cathedral—an event that symbolically underscored the importance of the upcoming 900th anniversary. Key institutions have joined the organization of the celebrations. The Stavanger Museum (MUST) is preparing new historical and natural history exhibitions, drawing on its collection of nearly 200,000 artifacts. The Stavanger Tourist Association, with 27,000 members, will offer a series of outdoor routes, courses, and events highlighting the region’s natural beauty. The Archaeological Museum at the University of Stavanger, which operates as a separate faculty, plays a central role in the restoration of the cathedral and is developing several projects for the jubilee year. The Port of Stavanger, together with the Engøyholmen Coastal Culture Center, plans to recreate the historic national regatta of 1868. Stavanger aims to present itself not only as Norway’s “energy capital,” but also as a dynamic cultural city that blends heritage with innovation. The 2025 jubilee is expected to highlight: a commitment to sustainable development and the green transition; the city’s rich maritime and archaeological heritage; its diverse cultural life — museums, libraries, festivals, and arts events; active resident participation in shaping Stavanger’s modern identity.
