Нова робота португальського режисера Даніеля Соареша «Деякі речі, що відбуваються поруч із річкою» (Algumas Coisas que Acontecem ao Lado de um Rio) увійшла до офіційної конкурсної програми короткометражних фільмів 79-го Каннського кінофестивалю. Для автора це вже не перша поява на Круазетт: у 2024 році його стрічка Bad For a Moment отримала спеціальну відзнаку журі, а сам режисер представив свої роботи на фестивалях у Локарно та Клермон-Феррані. Новий фільм створено у форматі міжнародної копродукції Португалія- Франція. Portuguese film about teenagers selected for Cannes short film competition
For Soares, this is not his first appearance on the Croisette. In 2024, his short Bad For a Moment received a special mention from the jury, and his work has also been presented at major festivals including Locarno and Clermont-Ferrand. The new film is a Portugal–France co-production. It centres on an unsettling image: a group of teenagers drifting down a river, staging their own deaths for social media, while one of them gradually separates from the others. The film continues Soares’s ongoing exploration of isolation, fragile human connections and the ways in which digital culture shapes both individual and collective identity. This year’s Cannes short film programme appears notably diverse, yet conceptually coherent. Across the selection, there is a clear emphasis on interior experience, physical presence and the tension between the personal and the social.
Soares’s inclusion marks the sixth time a Portuguese short film has featured in Cannes’ official selection. Previous entries include:

Daniel Soares, a director and screenwriter born in Germany to a Portuguese family, has established himself on the international festival circuit. His work has received awards at Premiers Plans in Angers, IndieLisboa and the Zagreb Film Festival. Alongside filmmaking, he also works in photography, with projects exhibited at institutions such as the International Center of Photography in New York. In 2026, only 10 films were selected for the short film competition from more than 3,000 submissions representing 136 countries. The Palme d’Or for best short film will be awarded on 23 May during the festival’s closing ceremony.
