19 вересня в Ліоні відкрилася 18-та Бієнале сучасного мистецтва — To pass from one dream to another («Переходити від однієї мрії до іншої»).

To pass from one dream to another

To pass from one dream to another

La Biennale de Lyon / Art

On 19 September, the 18th Lyon Biennale of Contemporary Art opened in Lyon under the title To pass from one dream to another. Curated by Australian curator Catherine Nichols, who is based in Berlin, the Biennale brings together more than 100 artists from around the world, presenting their work across 11 venues in Lyon and the surrounding metropolitan area through 13 December. This year’s Biennale moves away from the traditional exhibition model centred on a single museum space. Instead, it invites visitors to move through the city, from former industrial sites and museums to spaces not normally associated with exhibitions. The main venue is Les Grandes Locos, a former technical centre of the French railway. Other locations include the Musée d’art contemporain de Lyon, the Musée des Beaux-Arts, and the Musée des Tissus, which has opened its doors specially for the Biennale, alongside other venues across the city.

The starting point of Catherine Nichols’s curatorial concept is Lyon’s traboules — hidden passageways running through courtyards, buildings and staircases. Historically, they connected neighbourhoods shaped by silk production, trade and banking, while also bearing traces of workers’ uprisings, wartime resistance and today’s gentrification. For Nichols, the title To pass from one dream to another therefore describes more than simply moving between exhibition venues.

Her approach draws on Walter Benjamin’s unfinished Arcades Project, which explored Parisian arcades as spaces where societies produce collective dreams, as well as French artist Robert Filliou’s idea of a “poetic economy”.

For Nichols, economy extends far beyond financial markets. It encompasses the ways societies produce, distribute and preserve resources, build relationships, and decide what is valuable and worth protecting. Alongside money and industry, the Biennale therefore explores care, memory, solidarity, migration, technology, ecology and human relationships. These ideas shape its three principal venues: macLYON focuses on existential questions of life, death, inheritance, debt and value; Musée des Tissus examines collective labour, care and solidarity; while Les Grandes Locos centres on industry, work, resource extraction, technology and the material world.

Writing in Le Monde, French critic Philippe Dagen notes that the relationship between individual works and the theme of economy varies considerably. Some address production, trade or resources directly, while others appear only loosely connected to the subject. Yet this diversity prevents the Biennale from becoming a uniform curatorial statement. Among the works he highlights is Armenian artist Lucia Kagramanyan’s installation at Musée des Tissus: five hammock-like forms resembling pregnant bellies, decorated with symbolic motifs and designed for listening to Armenian lullabies. Here, economy becomes intertwined with memory, motherhood, historical trauma and contemporary politics. Togolese artist Kokou Ferdinand Makouvia creates another dreamlike environment from organic and botanical forms, terracotta, rope and copper wire. South Korean artist Yehwan Song connects threatened water systems with the flows of digital information and mobile technologies.

With a budget of around €8 million, the 18th Biennale depends on both public and private partners. Le Monde describes it as a “biennial of crisis”: the participation of some artists was confirmed only after the necessary funding had been secured. The result is an almost perfect contemporary-art paradox — an exhibition examining the economy while depending on the very economic mechanisms of the art world for its own existence.

The Biennale is best approached as a journey: from the industrial scale of Les Grandes Locos, through the memory, textiles, labour and human relationships explored at Musée des Tissus, to the more personal and existential questions at macLYON. Visitors are not expected to find a single answer about the economy. Instead, the exhibition asks them to move from one way of seeing to another — from one dream to another.
